about

this is a poem i wrote over the course of a year walking home from work. i'd write a few more lines and work out the structure on those long cold walks, watching traffic and industry moving forward with very little in the way of looking at the road behind us for perspective.

lyrics

we don't leave nothing, nothing behind
we don't leave nothing but this stinkin' lie
all gotta something to hide behind

we don't leave nothing except for our blood
mixed up swallowed and in with the mud
all got high and we all run low
all gotta try to roll with the blows

we don't leave nothing, nothin' at all
but the flat black top
the push and fall
runnin' away until we hit the wall now anyway

nothin' under this soft black snow
but the few dead people that had to go
heaven knows that's how we find home

the trees and the forest were in the way
birds and the bees just had to pay
livin' in sin, ain't nothing better
hope you get rich in hell

we don't leave nothin, nothing alone
don't leave nothin' till we hit the bone
all gotta find our own ways to get home
and it don't really matter what seeds we sew

so you're askin' me more for your shopping lines
telling me you know it's just so divine
take and take till there ain't nothing left
the writing's on the wall in tequila and lime

and so we don't leave nothing at all, no
nothing but the push and fall

don't leave nothing alive
nothing else left in this old two-bit dive

well celebrity longevity is always prime
hear that phone call, know that it's my dime
i played the game so what? and i lost
the world is getting rich and don't give a toss
to see the fire in the eyes of all us people
only blokes smoke dokes and we ain't all equals

coming down again
coming down in flames

so we don't leave nothin' in this bad neighbourhood
but a fat old joker staing up at the moon
who let it all roll on the firey dice
for the women, the cars, gold and ice

well i can't see the stars for these city lights
can't sing my sould on this winter's night
can't find the sky by the light of day
i seen it all scraped off, bought and paid

we don't leave nothing behind
we don't leave nothing 'cause it's closing time
it fell like rain, gluttony and sin
i felt it on my clothes but not a drop on my skin

so we drive our cars and go real fast
buy some beer to get a piece of ass
fast we keep on going, fuck off
show no sign of slowing

so this is how we deal with what we've done
keep on glowing 'till we blot out the sun
take and take 'till there ain't nothing left
but a cold harmonic and cigatrette
